Seeing Oneself

“That girl looks like me!” was the response of a Bexley fourth grader upon exploring the many new books added to fourth and fifth grade elementary classrooms in the fall of 2021. The books are inclusive of different races and genders both for authors and for the main characters.

The Bexley Minority Parent Alliance, a partner with the Bexley Education Foundation, had identified the classroom library expansions as a key way for the School District to increase cultural pride, classroom engagement and increase feelings of self-esteem, belongingness and acceptance among all students.
