The Gift of Time
In the summer of 2023, HOMAGE COO and Bexley Education Foundation Board Member, Steve Werman took the advice of a good friend, a gastroenterologist and got a colonoscopy, even though he was only 40 – below the currently recommended age for colorectal cancer screening. A few months later, Steve found out that he had a cancerous tumor in his colon.
Luckily Steve’s cancer was caught early, and he’s on the road to recovery. Steve, who has always run for exercise, decided to take on the challenge of running the NYC marathon so he could fulfill his dream of running that race and raise awareness and money for the Colorectal Cancer Alliance at the same time. He trained with friends and colleagues including fellow BHS Alum, Ilya Bodner, ‘01, Maren Roth and Liz Sklaw. Their Tuesday morning running group was also often joined by other runners including Jason Block, ‘01, Liz Dutton, Doug Ulman, Tali Friedman and Mark Dausen.
The race proved formidable but Steve finished and remembers “how amazing it was to see my wife and the friends who came out to support us.” Now that Steve has been given the gift of time, he is looking forward to being with his family for many, many more years and seeing his three young children grow up, and he is considering running the marathon again – to improve upon his time.
Homage currently has a "Bexley Runs" shirt available with a portion of proceeds going to Colorectal Cancer Alliance available here.
