Folkman Scientist-in-Residence

October 25, 2019 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

The 2019 Judah Folkman, MD Scientist-in-Residence program will be held on Friday, October 25 at Bexley High School. This is the 19th year for the program, which is funded by the BEF’s Dr. Judah Folkman (Class of 1950) Science Endowment Fund and is aimed at introducing Bexley students to the wide range of career opportunities in the sciences.

The program honors Dr. Judah Folkman, a 1950 Bexley High School graduate, who is recognized for his achievements in the field of cancer research and the specialty of angiogenesis, the process by which a tumor attracts blood vessels to nourish and sustain itself. Dr. Folkman died in 2008.

This year, students will have the opportunity to engage with four visiting specialists in the field of orthopedic surgery. The visiting surgeons will interact with students in Bexley High School Science classrooms following the live broadcast in the Schottenstein Theatre of Dr. Joel Politi performing a knee replacement surgery. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions in real time and hear Dr. Politi’s responses. This broadcast is in partnership with COSI.

This year’s visiting scientists-in-residence are: Dr. Alex Matrka a 2006 graduate of Bexley High School and Orthopedic Surgery Resident at the Mayo Clinic; Dr. Michael Williard, a 1978 graduate of Bexley High School who specializes in shoulder reconstruction at Orthopedic One; Dr. Joel Politi who specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery at Orthopedic One and founded COSI’s surgical suite and Dr. Curtis Henn a 2001 graduate of Bexley High School and surgeon at MedStar Georgetown University, specializing in hand surgery.
